Homemade Smoker 5

Sorry about the quality of the video and sudden movements, and forgive me for mixing my words up so much. I had a 60lb blue heeler trying taking cover between my legs throughout the film . I don't do well multi tasking like this very well. Just a quick close up for those of you who might be interested in building one of these yourself. In reality this is just an electric version of the old firebox version. I think I paid about the same amount I could have bought a nice new electric smoker for, around 0 all said and done. But my concern was none of the smokers were big enough for me and even the bigger one's were way out of my budget. So I'm happy with my investment. The most important things you need is the 55gal drum (or whatever will work for you), heating element, insulation (a must!), and something to hold your rack. For the grate I just used some what I believe to be 5/16 x 3 1/2in bolts with fender washers on both the outside and inside so the weight can be distributed better. Really this is just a prototype, the point here is you can custom make yours any way you like. I just stress to use some kind of insulation because these little elements are not that powerful and were not meant for something this big. Mine would max out at around 180*F with no insulation. After I added the insulation I can now top over 300*F easily and this will help the element last longer. I hope this helps and if you do make one please feel free to add a video response or send pics of it ...

The End of the American Dream - Suspended Constitution

Radical elements within the US government led by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others used the 9/11 attacks to undermine the democratic rights of the American people by what amounts to suspending the constitution and replacing it with what is essentially fascist legislation: the Patriot Act. As a result, the US now maintains torture camps all over the world - of which Guantanamo (Cuba), Abu Ghraib (Iraq) and Bagram (Afghanistan) - are only the most notorious and wages unrestrained war against civilians in countries that never posed a direct threat to the United States. The recent Wikileaks revelations have shown with what brutality and utter disregard for human life these wars are being conducted (helicopter video). Inside the US things don't look much better with Americans now constantly being monitored and controlled by a police state that has over 2000 agencies watching over their every move, and inhumane treatment being meted out to anyone who dares oppose Washington; Bradley Manning being only one example. If the American people don't claim back their country soon, the USA will turn into a fascist state controlled by an alliance of ultra-right-wing politicians, fundamentalist Christians, and sinister CEOs of large corporations. Such a turn of events would be a disaster for the world. Unfortunately, the election of Obama has changed nothing in Washington's corridors of power. If you enjoyed the clip, why not watch the whole film? (The End of America by Annie Sundberg)

Why I Prefer Lump Wood Charcoal

!±8± Why I Prefer Lump Wood Charcoal

The history and tradition of charcoal burning goes back thousands of years and there's something magical about cooking on a charcoal barbecue grill.

Charcoal is the traditional fuel for barbecues because it produces a hot, long-lasting fire that is virtually smokeless. The fundamentals of charcoal manufacture is the burning of wood in a low-oxygen atmosphere, a process that drives out the moisture and volatile gases present in the original fuel. The elimination of the moisture reduces the weight of the fuel by up to 70% and the resulting charred material also burns for much longer than the original piece of wood.

Charcoal has been manufactured since pre-historic times and we know this following the discovery of a ancient body in a melting glacier in the Austrian Alps. Scientists dated the remains of the man back approximately 5,000 years and they also found that he had been carrying a small box of charred wood wrapped in leaves. The scientists deduced that the charred wood was probably smouldering and what the man would use to start a fire because apart from this box, he was not carrying any other fire starting materials such as a flint.

Even 6,000 years ago, charcoal was the preferred fuel for smelting copper and this continued to be the case for iron as well even as late as the 17th century when charcoal was superseded by coke. Charcoal was also popular in many other industries much later primarily because of the abundance of forests in many areas and the process of coppicing made it a sustainable resource. Something that we should consider in this age of global warming - many environmentalists see wood and charcoal as carbon neutral because of the ability of trees to grow and absorb the greenhouse gases. Charcoal has been used for domestic heating and maybe we should start to use it more in chimineas rather than the gas powered patio heater?

The ultimate transition of charcoal from a heating and industrial fuel to a recreational cooking material took place around 1920 when Henry Ford created the charcoal briquette. The business proved extremely profitable for Ford because the charcoal briquettes were manufactured out of waste wood from the car plants and his sideline business also encouraged recreational use of cars for picnic outings - great link selling! In fact charcoal BBQ grills and Ford Charcoal were sold at Ford dealerships as well.

The retort method is used to manufacture charcoal briquettes and it involves passing wood through a series of hearths or ovens and the major revolution is that it is a continuous process rather than having to be made in discrete batches as with traditional lump wood charcoal. The traditional method of charcoal production was by piling wood in a pyramid and covering it with dirt, turf, or ashes, leaving air vents around the base and a chimney at the top. The wood was then set alight and allowed to burn slowly and once complete the air vents were then covered up so the pyramid would cool.

I suspect that the benefits of briquette manufacture are attractive to the manufacturing business man but there's something magical about the batch production of lump wood charcoal. Different stages in the process are indicated by different colors of smoke as the moisture is driven off and there's an element of skills being passed from father to son. Maybe I'm being too sentimental but whenever I'm cooking on charcoal I always feel safe in the knowledge that a traditional industry is propagating.

What Constitutes a Healthy Work Environment?

!±8± What Constitutes a Healthy Work Environment?

We all know how important the work environment is in terms of productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction. All businesses strive, or should strive to achieve a healthy work environment for their employees. But what constitutes a healthy work environment? Is it literal health, as in good ventilation, natural lighting and lots of plants? Is it psychological health, as in job security and respect for employee values? Or is it supplying the means to get healthy, as in an onsite gym and a cafeteria with no fried foods?

Or is it all of the above?

You may have heard of "sick building syndrome", which is when employees experience a variety of ailments (symptoms resemble flu) at work, which generally ease when they go home. Poor ventilation is the main culprit, combined with chemical agents (bouquets of perfumes and deodorants, and cleaning agents), emissions from electrical appliances, and biological agents (mould growing in the air conditioning system).

Sick buildings can be treated. I will now alienate all smokers. Smoking should be banned from the building. Separate smoking rooms are all good and well, if the extractor fan is in good working order. But what is smoke other than burnt air? And what does air do best? It wafts of course.

Smoke does not come across a keyhole or crack in the door and stop. It wafts on, meandering through the building, into eyes and up assorted nostrils until finally it does settle, indiscriminately, in everyone's lungs. Designating a smoking area outside is a viable alternative, provided it's not right by the door, where air currents are ideal for wafting.

Optimise air flow by removing as many obstacles as possible. That means that partitions or cubicle should be raised slightly off the floor and occasionally rearranged to shift air flow. Keep ventilation systems in optimal working order, service them regularly and keep the filters clean.

Go green, literally, and invest in plants. Scientists at NASA have found that some plants (Bamboo Palm, Spider Plants) actually absorb harmful gases and chemicals. Placing a pot plant near your computer will protect your from its nasty emissions, it will also soothe your eyes when you look away from your screen (which you should do every 20 minutes), as well as liven up the office.

One of the most important indications of a psychologically healthy environment is laughter. Colleagues who laugh together work well together. Laughter is a sign of comfort within the work environment and should be encouraged. Occurrences of insane laughter in a corner, however, should be investigated, and the poor soul provided with help.

Open-door policies that encourage free sharing of ideas are an important element in employee health. Employees who are listened to feel valued, they also feel that they can make a tangible difference to the business, which enhances job satisfaction.

A growing trend these days is for companies to provide facilities for employees to optimise their physical health. Often this means that they install a gym on the premises for employees to work out before or after work, or even during lunch. An alternative for companies too small to install an entire gym is to conduct meetings on the move. Instead of sitting around a table in a stale room to discuss ideas in a stale, take the meeting for a walk in the (comparatively) fresh outdoors. A different physical point of view can stimulate metaphysical ones, not to mention the cardio benefit of walking and talking.

Just because competition is savage doesn't mean your environment has to be. A few simple measures can ensure the health and happiness of your employees and a happy employee is a productive one.

How to Get the Grill Taste Without the Mess and Hassle With Electric Grills

!±8± How to Get the Grill Taste Without the Mess and Hassle With Electric Grills

Warm weather is generally the best time for outdoor grilling, yet it is also the time when many people are busy and do not have the time for traditional grilling. Charcoal grills can be a hassle to prepare and clean. Outdoor electric grills are easy to maintain and still provide the same grilled taste created by traditional grills without the hassle of buying the charcoal bricks and fire starter, disposing of the ashes, and then cleaning the grill.

The Advantages Of Outdoor Electric Grills

The greatest advantage to owning this type of grill is that it has no volatile flame which eliminates a lot of the guess work associated with grilling. They are easy to clean as most models are equipped with removable drip trays and dishwasher-safe cooking grids. The second plus is that outdoor electric grills combine dual heating elements to sear in flavors, cook food evenly and thoroughly, and still retain the traditional grilling marks that are associated with the grilling experience.

Outdoor electric grills come in a variety of styles that will complement even the most contemporary lifestyles. For those individuals who like to enjoy grilling wherever they are, tabletop models are a perfect match. They are portable, convenient, and when coupled with optional carts and stands, they can be set up in any backyard, on a balcony, or even indoors when vented. Most units cook as much as a grill twice their size because of the dual element cooking system capability. The entire grilling surface reaches a uniform temperature, which allows for every inch of grilling space to be utilized. The benefits do not end here. Most models can be plugged into a 120-volt electrical outlet and only cost approximately 10 cents per hour to operate.

Summer Is A Great Time To Begin Using Outdoor Electric Grills

Being aware of your needs is an important first step in choosing the perfect grill. There are a variety of models to choose from, so incorporating outdoor electric grills into your lifestyle will be successful. Some models, for example, are most appropriate for people who have limited space. These units are compact, plug into a standard 120-volt electrical outlet, and come with a patented active heat technology. While it is an excellent choice for almost any location, it is a perfect fit for apartments, condo balconies, and homes with small patios.

An additional choice for limited space might be another unit that is compact in size and uses dual patented technology, allowing food to be grilled, seared, roasted, or baked. Because it comes with a simple cook number system that allows the grill to do the cooking for you, and air-rotisserie technology for even cooking, this unit is great for limited space and people with active lives. It costs pennies per hour to operate and is safe to use in areas where gas and charcoal won't work.

When space is not the most important consideration, perhaps a larger model would be one of the optimal selections. Made of high quality 18-gauge stainless steel, it resembles a traditional gas grill with a large cooking surface area. It comes with easy-to-clean drip trays and cooking grids. The temperature can reach up to 600 degrees for the best grilling results and, much like its comparative counterparts, it is safe to use in areas that restrict open flame grills. It is UL certified and has been tested for extreme conditions.

Models That Make Barbequing A Breeze

The most trusted electrical appliance manufacturers have a magnificent assortment of models that can take the worry out of choosing the most appropriate grill for almost every imaginable set of circumstances. Some electric barbeque grills offer the performance of gas with the simplicity, safety, and precision of a patented active heat technology, which plug into a 120-volt electrical outlet. It is an ideal choice for almost any location, including balconies, where gas grills are impractical or not allowed. It comes with a 216 square inch grilling surface and is manufactured with a durable, weatherproof matte black finish. The upper warming rack is perfect for vegetables and buns, and the unit is equipped with convenient tool holders that make it easy to keep your cooking area neat and tidy. Another grill from the same manufacturer that will fit any situation is the tabletop grill. This unique grill delivers full-size power in a compact, portable design. It also has a weatherproof finish with a large removable drip tray for easy cleaning, and its manual control allows for precision cooking.

Outdoor electric grills come in a variety of stand-alone units as well as space-conscious models, are priced to fit most budgets, and are easy to operate. Integrating outdoor electric grills into your lifestyle will be easy. All that is required is the desire to enjoy the ease of cooking outdoors during warm weather.
